Lead Community Walk for Children of Incarcerated Parents
Walk to bring awareness to the need for volunteer mentors for children
November 18, Cincinnati: The Cincinnati Youth Collaborative (CYC), KONNECT and Talbert House will lead a Community Walk for Justice in recognition of International Restorative Justice Week held November 12-18, to bring attention to the plight of children who have an incarcerated parent. The Walk will take place from 10:00am until 1:00pm starting at the AvondaleCommunityPrideCenter ((3520 Burnet Ave.) and ending at Carmel Presbyterian Church (3549 Reading Rd.).
This Walk for Justice has been organized by Khalil Osiris, SPARK (Strengthening Partnerships and Resource for Kids) Program Director at the CYC, to emphasize the need for volunteers to mentor children who have an incarcerated parent. According to Mr. Osiris, who is co-author of a book entitled The Psychology of Incarceration, "Our Walk for Justice is symbolic of the power we have to break the cycle of crime and violence in the Cincinnati community by making a personal investment in our youth through service as volunteer mentors".
To further emphasize the critical need for mentors, Warden Tracy Tyson-Parker of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and CorrectionFranklinPre-ReleaseCenter in Columbus, Ohio will have incarcerated mothers at her institution participating in a Walk-A-Thon fundraiser held the same day. The monies raised by the incarcerated mothers will be donated to CYC, KONNECT and Talbert House for a holiday party being held for children being served by their mentoring programs.
A leader in youth development programs since 1987, the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative creates, facilitates and supports positive educational, social and economic programs to benefit the region's youth - with primary focus on Cincinnati Public School-age and young-adult populations. Focusing on two primary areas- Mentoring and College Access, CYC brings together people, institutions, and other community resources to help youth graduate from high school, enter post-secondary education, and/or obtain employment. Additional information on the CYC can be found at www.cycyouth.org.
