Our History

In early 1987, a steering committee of about 30 community leaders from education, religion, business, neighborhood, and social service agencies came together in an unprecedented partnership called the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. The goal? To try to reduce the rising failure and dropout rates in the Cincinnati Public Schools and to help every youth in Cincinnati realize his or her potential.

The vision: that all Cincinnati youth will graduate from high school with the comprehension, desire, and opportunity to realize their full potential—whether that be to assume a productive and satisfying job or go on to higher education. Specifically, the Collaborative was formed to:

  • Increase high school graduation rates
  • Improve the overall academic performance of students
  • Increase the number of students attending college, and
  • Increase the number of youth entering the job market

Over the years, CYC has created new programs or collaborated with existing school- and community-based programs to meet these objectives. CYC's programs have evolved to become what is now known as the Mentoring Program and College Access. Most recently CYC united with Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates to deliver the Jobs for American Graduates model of dropout prevention and recovery. All programs have been recognized, nationally, regionally, and locally, as some of the best in the country in promoting and serving city youth.

You'd be surprised at how easy it is to become a volunteer, and how quickly you can start making a difference in a student's life. Join us today.
